Job Searching Techniques:

How many job search techniques do you use?

While looking through newspaper is a good start there are other options to be explored.

  • The local library has a wealth of information in the books, publications and magazines.
  •  Look at your business community and service organizations. Chambers of Commerce and Rotary Clubs for example may provide information on companies they are affiliated with.
  • Calling organizations is essential, but you may get ahead by going to them and checking their notice boards and speaking with personnel or human resource staff.
  • Creating a strong network is important.
    Involve family members, friends, acquaintances, neighbours, for example, in your search. Any information you access will be an asset.
  • Contact individual organizations (the telephone directory can be very useful)
  • College graduates should keep in touch with campus job placement facilities. Local employment agencies are also a good place to search.
  • Use the Internet widely. Post your resume and job needs; and visit all the web sites that will aid your search.
*Research as much as you can about the position for which you are applying and the person most likely suited for that position. Sum up what you have learned and prove that you have the knowledge and skills required to do the job.
*Take along your resume with you and a personal fact sheet containing dates of previous employment, schools attended, names addresses and contact numbers for referees. This ensures that you provide correct and consistent information and saves time.
*Answer all questions. However if the question does not apply, you may write N/A (not applicable) in the space provided.
*If you do not understand a question do not leave it blank. Ask someone for clarification.
ü Do not omit information about yourself that may be negative as this could give the employer a reason not to hire you. Present yourself in the best possible way but always be truthful.

The application process is important because:

*You only get one chance to make a positive first impression. In many circumstances, your potential employer will see the application letter before he sees you.
*From your letter the employer will have an idea of your spelling and writing skills, how well you follow instructions and the pride you take in your work.
*The information you include on you application letter will assist your potential employer in deciding whether to select you for an interview so ensure that your skills and qualifications are correctly represented and completed.

 

Do your own self-assessment! 

Itemize the characteristics you think employers value. You should make separate lists for your various interests.

Use these indicators to shape your attitude and expectations.

When preparing an application form it is not simply a matter of providing information. A well constructed form can take you a long way through the selection procedure.
*Each application form is different therefore it is important that you read the instructions carefully before you begin

*On submitting your application form if you do receive an immediate response, follow up every 1- 2 weeks to check on its status.

 Birth Certificate

*Know the jobs you can do

The job application is often times the first step in finding a job. It introduces you and your Curriculum Vitae to potential employers and/or recruitment officers. It is crucial that you prepare

*If you are not selected for the position for which you applied many employers opt to have your application letter remain on their files in the event that another suitable position becomes available.

Interviews are all about information. It will be an asset for you to know about the company. Having an idea of company's history, organization and its purpose will make a good impression.

On applying for a job, ensure that you possess the skills and qualification needed. Do not waste your time or the company's by applying for posts for which you are not qualified.

When introducing yourself to a company, be sure your resume is current, properly structured and highlights all your qualities. Remember that along with the cover letter this is will make your first impression.
