Alpha Boys Home

The institution is owned and operated by the Sisters of Mercy.  It receives assistance from the Government of Jamaica through the Ministry of Health.  Most of the boys are from other schools which could not deal effectively with their poor discipline or truancy, although there are some slow learners.    The students' ages range from six to 18 years.  School starts at the remedial level (Kindergarten) and goes up to grade 11.  In addition to the academics, the boys are allowed to learn skills in the areas of music, printing, bookbinding, woodwork and tailoring at the Kingston location.  They also have an opportunity of going to the "sister school" in Mandeville to learn animal husbandry, catering and butcher trade training.

Carberry Court Special School for Children with Mental Retardation

Caters to special children referred by Mico Care Centre, School of Hope or any other assessment agency.  The children attending this institution are slow learners, troubled children with behavourial and learning problems as well as some who are physically challenged.  The age of the student population ranges from six to 18 years.  Programmes offered include academics, art and craft, sewing, home economics and agriculture.  The institution is privately owned, however, it receives funding from the Government of Jamaica.

Danny Williams School for the Deaf

The institution is funded by the Jamaica Association for the Deaf and the Government of Jamaica. The students are hearing impaired and their ages range from zero to twelve years.  The children aged zero to six years attend the pre-school section while those aged 6 to 12 years attend the primary school.

Jamaica Association for Children with Learning Disabilities

This institution caters to children with learning disabilities, such as slow learners.  Children are accepted between the ages of 6 and 12 years on a full time basis.  Children at the secondary level between ages 12 and 17 are accepted into the after school programme.  The institution is privately funded.

Lister Mair/Gilby High School for the Deaf

This school caters to hearing impaired children aged 12 to 18 years.  Its programme is organised so that students are grouped according to their aptitude and special programmes are designed to meet individual needs.  Students are prepared to sit a variety of external examinations from recognized examining bodies such as the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC), the General Certificate Examination (GCE), Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and National Vocational Qualifications of Jamaica (NVQJ).  The vocational (skills) training includes Cosmetology, Information Technology, Clothing and Textiles, Carpentry and Joinery, Visual Arts/Craft, Food Preparation and Technical Drawing.  Students who do not attain external examinations standard are equipped with life skills. 

 

 

The Lister Mair/Gilby Institute for Adult Education caters to members of the adult deaf community who desire to further their education.  The courses offered are first geared towards enhancement of basic literacy skills.  CXC and/or GCE courses are presently being offered in Mathematics, English Language, Principles of Accounts, Principles of Business, Office Procedures and Information Technology.  The institution is funded by the Jamaica Association for the Deaf and is aided by the Government of Jamaica.

McCam Child Care and Development Centre

The McCam Child Care and Development Centre is divided into five parts - Day Care, Pre-school, Kindergarten, Special Education Intervention and After School Care.  The services offered include:

  • assessments

  • therapeutic intervention to stimulate speech and language development, improve motor skills/sensory integration, and to modify behaviour

  • community outreach

  • resource centre.

The staff includes early childhood teachers, occupational therapist, special educators, practical nurses and itinerant speech therapist.  The nursery accommodates children aged one to two years, pre-school two to four years and the Kindergarten section is for children four to six years of age.  When the children are six years old, recommendation is made for appropriate school placement.

Salvation Army School for the Blind

This school caters to children aged 4 to 18 years who are visually impaired.  The classes range from Infant to Grade 10.  The institution is funded by the Salvation Army and is aided by the Government of Jamaica.

School of Hope for Children with Mental Retardation

This School of Hope for Children, which is located in Kingston, caters to persons with mental retardation or other developmental disabilities. Students usually leave at 18 years old, however, the maximum age for persons with severe mental retardation is 22 years of age.   It has 27 units which are located in all of the parishes except Trelawny.  There is a  pre-school in Greater Portmore which accepts children in the four to six age group as well as a facility in Westmoreland which accepts children from baby to six years of age and prepares them for school.  The Kingston facility has two programmes - functional academics and vocational skills in the areas of Home management, Child Care, Agriculture/Horticulture, Ceramics, Woodwork and Art and Craft.

Woodside School for the Deaf

This school accepts children aged two to twenty years who are hearing impaired.  Three programmes are offered - Pre-school, Primary School and Secondary School.  The content of the academic programmes are modified to meet the specific needs of the children.  Based on the ability of the child, some are able to sit external examinations offered by HEART Trust/NTA, Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) and General Certificate Examination (GCE).  All graduating students are required to sit Secondary School Certificate (SSC).  The secondary school also gives the children the opportunity to learn various skills which include Home Economics, Sewing/Needlework, Cookery, Agriculture, Mechanical Welding and Woodwork.
