COLLEGE OF INSURANCE AND PROFESSIONAL STUDIES (CIPS)

CIPS is the official education arm of the Insurance Institute of Jamaica.  It provides training for the General Insurance industry as well as the wider business community.  The courses offered are as follows:

 

Jamaica Insurance Diploma

The Jamaica Insurance Diploma has been accepted by The Chartered Insurance Institute of London as evidence of satisfactory fulfillment of the requirements for the introductory examinations for the Associateship (ACII) Diploma.  It consists of 366 hours of instruction in:

  • Risk and Insurance

  • Contract Law and insurance

  • The Business Environment

  • Personal Insurance

  • Principles and Practice of Reinsurance

  • Marketing

 

Admission requirements

Prospective candidates must satisfy either List A or B.

 

List A

  • At least four subjects at the GCE 'O'Level or CXC General Proficiency.  This should include English Language, Mathematics and at least two of he following subjects:

  History

  Natural Science

  Public and Economic Relations

  Commerce

  Geography

  Economics

  Surveying

  Elements or Principles of Accounts

  a foreign language

  Computer Studies

  English Literature

  • pass the College's English Proficiency Test (EPT).  Persons who fail the EPT must pursue the Use of Business English course.

Applicants without GCE 'O'Level or CXC Mathematics must pass the "Mathematics for the Business Environment" course which is offered by the College.

 

 

List B (for mature candidates)

This is for persons who are at least 25 years of age who are employed in insurance.  These persons must

pass:

  • the College's EPT

  • English Language and Mathematics at the CXC/GCE or pursue the "Use of Business English and Mathematics for the Business Environment" course at the College.

 

Certificate/Diploma in Supervisory Management

There are four Supervisory Management courses offered by CIPS.  Completion of the first three leads to the Certificate.  Persons who successfully complete the fourth level are awarded the Diploma.

 

Supervisory Management I covers:

  • the role and function of a supervisor generally and in an insurance company e.g. organisational structure and administrative functions

  • basic principles of human relations

  • the meaning and application of basic principles such as accountability, delegation, span of control, task analysis, variance analysis and self concept

  • definition and explanation of basic tools of supervision such as work plan and organisation tools

  • Basic supervisory principles and approaches

  • organisation and administration of a typical insurance office

  • the provisions of select labour laws

Supervisory Management II covers:

  • identification of basic supervision problems in Jamaica and the application of problem/solution analysis  methodology

  • the theory and application of decision analysis to group and individual decision making

  • identification and application of the principles of basic stress to events or conditions on and off the job

  • the conceptualisation of basic life insurance office management with emphasis on practical solutions

Supervisory Management III covers:

  • performance measurement and assessment tools

  • reliability and validity factors

  • cognitive vs. affective skills

  • case study analysis

  • principles of good customer relations

  • introduction to collective bargaining and the art of negotiation

  • conducting on-the-job assessment interviews

Supervisory Management IV covers:

  • recognising stress at the work place

  • the disadvantage of a stressful environment on productivity

  • stressors and their psychological and physiological effect

  • total quality management

  • win-win approach to problem solving

  • guides to decision-making

  • time analysis

  • use of information technology

  • effective delegation - case study, group analysis

A research paper is also to be submitted to meet the requirements of this segment of the course.

 

Information Technology

This course aims to educate participants on the use of information and information systems in their organisations and it includes:

  • the nature of information systems - systems theory, data and information, computers, system requirements, hardware or software

  • characteristics of information systems - input technology, output methodology, storage, telecommunications, systems analysis and programming

  • systems development - organisational structures, systems concepts, selection criteria, development cycle, design considerations, system implementation

  • controls - physical security, data security, operational controls, systems audit

  • introduction to hardware, operating environment (DOS), Lotus 1-2-3, WordPerfect, DAC-Easy

Certificate in Insurance Studies

There is open admission to this Certificate programme although participants are required to pass Introduction to Insurance and Legal Principles before being admitted to their areas of specialisation.  The courses in this programme are:

  • motor insurance

  • property insurance

  • business interruption

  • principles and practice of marine insurance

  • principles of risk management

  • claims

  • insurance of legal liability

  • principles of loss adjusting

  • insurance accounting

JUSTICE TRAINING INSTITUTE

 

The Justice Training Institute designs and conducts several training programmes.  These include:

 

Certificate in Legal Administration

The objectives of the programme are to enhance the professional and practical capabilities of the participants as well as to provide a comprehensive understanding and appreciation of key areas of legal administration.

 

Eligibility

The programme is geared towards persons in the Public and Private Sectors who work in law offices or legal departments.  Applicants should possess at least five CXC or GCE O'Level subjects including English Language.

 

Duration

Two days per week for 36 weeks.

 

Application Process

Application forms are available at the Justice Training Institute, 4 Camp Road, Kingston 4.  The completed application forms along with a processing fee should be returned to the Institute.  Pre-selected candidates are interviewed and then a final selection is made.

Professional Development I (emphasis on defining and setting goals, professionalism, internalising roles)

Seminar session with emphasis on the practical application of land principles such as the drafting of documents relating to land law and trust administration.

 

Certificate in Supervisory Management

The objective is to strengthen/enhance the supervisory capabilities of the participants so that they can maximise the efficiency and effectiveness of the persons they supervise.

 

Eligibility

The target group is actual and potential supervisors in the Public and Private Sectors.  The minimum entry requirement is four CXC or GCE O'Level subjects including English Language.  Persons who are already in supervisory positions in key areas who do not have the necessary educational qualifications may be admitted based on credible recommendation.

 

Duration

Five days

Seminar/Workshop for Court Accountants

This course is held periodically.  It is highly interactive and it covers the things that Court Accountants need to address in their daily activities such as:

  • cashiering functions

  • collection of monies

  • bank reconciliation

  • cash book and petty cash

  • voucher preparation

  • imprest management

  • customer service

  • communication

  • time management

  • interpersonal relationship

Target Group

All Court Accountants and collecting officers nominated by the Court Administrator or the Magistrate.

 

Duration and Venue

Two days at the Justice Training Institute.

 

Seminar/Workshop on Effective Customer Service

The aim of the course is to improve the level of customer service in the justice system and reduce the number of complaints.

 

Target Group

Front line personnel who are required to interact with the customers.

 

Duration

Two days.

 

Course Content

  • Quality customer service

  • The new public service mandate

  • Role of the customer service provider

  • Determining customers' needs

  • Effective customer service skills

  • Active listening

  • Dealing with customers on the telephone

  • Dealing with the difficult customer

  • Effective problem-solving skills

  • A plan for achieving higher levels of customer care

Certificate in Computer Applications I

Target Group

Persons with little or no knowledge of Microsoft applications.

 

Duration

Five weeks.

 

Areas of Instruction

  • Basic computer hardware

  • Common computer terms

  • Operating Systems

  • Introduction to Microsoft Word

  • Introduction to Microsoft Excel

  • Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint and basic presentation skills

  • Basic Internet skills

 

Certificate in Computer Applications II

Target Group

Persons with previous knowledge of Microsoft applications.

 

Duration

Six weeks.

 

Areas of Instruction

  • Microsoft Word - editing techniques, character and paragraph formatting, working with tabs, creating and editing tables and controlling page appearance

  • Introduction to Microsoft Excel - spreadsheet, using formulae, modifying workbook, formatting a worksheet and graph presentation

  • Microsoft PowerPoint and presentation skills - PowerPoint presentations, slide shows, outputs, presentation options, Clipart and Word Art

  • Internet access - World Wide Web, using search tools, Outlook Express, managing contacts, downloading files, managing messages

 

Sign Language Competency Certificate Course (Intermediate) Level II

Course Content

  • teach the participants at least 50 basic legal terms in Jamaican Sign Language

  • teach the participants the answers to at least 60 questions which are posed by hearing and speech impaired citizens

  • conduct a basic interview with hearing and speech impaired persons

  • interpret at least 100 which have been communicated in Sign Language

  • interpret at least 150 Jamaica Sign Language signs

  • interpret/identify the meaning of a short scenario presented by hearing and speech impaired person(s) using communication strategies often employed by these persons

  • using Jamaica Sign Language, explain the contents of a short written paragraph to hearing and speech impaired persons

  • produce a ten minutes video with a hearing and speech impaired adult, which discusses a concern in the Jamaican society of the hearing and speech impaired citizens

Target Group

  • Persons serving in the Justice Sector or be involved in activities which impact on the interests of the hearing and speech impaired.

  • Personnel that is required to communicate on a regular basis with the hearing and speech impaired.

Entry Qualification

  • Certificate in Sign Language Competency Course Level I offered by the Justice Training Institute; or

  • Equivalent qualification which is not more than two years old; or

  • a signing level which is determined by the course teachers to be sufficient for the person to interface with the demands of the course.

Assessment

 

Participants will be assessed through daily quizzes, written examinations, theoretical and practical exercises, signed interviews and the production of a resource booklet.
