Bethlehem Moravian College, in association with the
joint board of Teacher Education (JBTE), the University of the West Indies
(UWI), and the Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica (CCJ), offers
certification which leads to:
* Diploma in teaching in Primary Education (Grade 1 to
6)
*
Diploma in Teaching in Secondary Education in specific subjects (Grades 7
to 12)
*
Associate Degree specializing in Business Studies or Hospitality,
Entertainment and Tourism
Duration of Diploma in Teaching and Associate Degree Programmes is
three years.
Diploma in Teaching
Admission Requirements:
-
Four CXC subjects at the General Proficiency Level Grades 1, 2, 3
or GCE O' level A, B, C including English Language; OR
-
Three CXC subjects at the General Proficiency Level Grades 1, 2,
3 or GCE O' level A, B, C including English Language and two CXC General
Proficiency Level Grade 4; OR
-
Three CXC subjects at the General Proficiency Level Grades 1, 2,
3 or GCE O' level A, B, C including English Language, one CXC General
Proficiency Level Grade 4 and one CXC Basic Proficiency Grade 1.
NB: It should be noted that CXC General Proficiency
Grade 3 is accepted for results received in 1998 and subsequent years. It
should also be noted that SSC Outstanding Achievement Ranges 4, 5 and a
Grade 2 certificate from a government agricultural school are considered
to be equivalents to the CXC and GCE O' level passes. Students with
Associate or Bachelor degrees (or higher) in the subject areas offered can
apply for Advanced Placement.

Diploma in Teaching - Primary Education Programme
Students receive training in a number of subjects which prepares
them to teach children aged 6 to 12 or 14 years that is, from Grade one to
six or eight.
* Secondary Education Programme
Areas of specialisation include:
Associate Degree Programmes
(i) Admission Requirements for Business Studies
Five CXC General Proficiency Level subjects Grades 1, 12 or 3 or
GCE O' level A, B or C; OR
CCCJ Business Administration Diploma; OR
Other equivalencies.
English Language and Principles of Accounts are compulsory
subjects.
(ii) Admission Requirements for Hospitality, Entertainment and
Tourism
Five CXC General Proficiency Level subjects Grades 1, 12 or 3 or
GCE O' level A, B or C; OR Other equivalencies.
English Language and Home Economics are compulsory subjects.
Other Programmes

Continuing Education
Students are prepared to sit CXC General Proficiency and GCE O'
level examinations in a
number of subjects.
Duration of the Programme is one year.
* Evening Institute
Classes are offered in:
All of the subjects offered in the CXC/GCE day classes;
Modules from the Associate Degrees.
* Tertiary Level Institute Unit (TLIU)
Offers Certificate in Management Studies (CMS) and Certificate in
Public Administration (CPA).
For admission students must be matriculated with the University of
the West Indies
or have practical experience or other qualification which the
University deems to be of special
relevance to the course.
* GCE A' Level and CAPE Programmes
Students are prepared for the GCE A' Level and CAPE examinations in
specified subjects.

Church Teacher's College
The College offers a three year Teacher Education
Programme which leads to a Diploma in Teaching at the Secondary (Grades 7
to 11). There is also an Advanced Placement Programme for students with
degrees. Applicants should be at least 17 years old.

Minimum Qualification for Entry

Four CXC subjects at the General Proficiency level including
English Language, Grades 1 and 2; OR

Language, Ranges 4 and 5; OR

A combination of a), b) or c) above, totalling four separate
subjects including English Language; OR

Three subjects including English Language at the CXC General
Proficiency Level Grades 1 and 2 or
-
at GCE O' level Grades A, B and C, and two subjects at the CXC
General Proficiency Level Grade 3.
NB: Students must have passes at the CXC General Proficiency Level
Grades 1 & 2 or GCE O' level Grades A, B and C in their teaching subjects.
It should also be noted that CXC General Proficiency Grade 3 is accepted
for results received in 1998 and subsequent years.

The Sam Sharpe Teachers’ College was established 1975
it offers Diploma in Teaching as well as degree programmes in association
with the Central Connecticut State University. (Diploma in Teaching
(Part-Time or Full-Time)
The Diploma Programmes include:
* Early Childhood Education
Students are prepared to teach pupils aged four to
seven years, that is infant education as well as Grades 1 & 2 at the
primary school level.
* Primary Education
Students are prepared to teach pupils aged seven to
twelve years, that is Grades 2 to 6.
* Special Education
Students are prepared to teach children aged four to
fourteen years who are challenged physically or mentally, deaf, blind,
handicapped or learning disabled.
* Guidance Counselling
Individuals are prepared to operate as Counsellors in
schools.
Matriculation Requirements:

Four subjects including English Language at the CXC
General Proficiency Level Grades 1, 2 & 3 or their equivalent.

Students reading Early Childhood Education, Primary
and Special Education must have a minimum of CXC Basic Proficiency Grade
2 in Mathematics or its equivalent before graduation.

Students opting to do Special Education should have
background in a Biological Science.

For Guidance Counselling, students will be required
to undergo a special assessment. It would be advantageous if applicants
were previously involved in activities related to social work and/or
-
counselling. Qualifications should include Human and
Social Biology and Social Studies. Students admitted without Human and
Social Biology will be required to pass this subject before being
promoted to Year 3.

Students should be at least 17 years of age in
December of the year of admission.
For the purposes of equivalencies, CXC Basic 1, GCE O'
level Grades A, B & C, SSC National Assessment Levels 4 & 5, ULCI General
2 are deemed to be equivalent to CXC Grades 1 & 2. Students with higher
qualifications e.g. A' Levels, may be considered for Advanced Placement by
credit.

ST. Joseph's Teachers' College
St. Joseph’s Teachers’ College offers Diploma in
Teaching. The areas of specialisation are Early Childhood and Primary
Education. Entry requirement is a minimum of four CXC subjects or
equivalent (including English Language) and the minimum age for entry is
17 years of age.
